Best restaurants in Puerto Escondido
Bi Nisa Cafe
Bi Nisa Cafe is in centro Puerto Escondido. It’s a family owned cafe with stellar service. Plus they have a beautiful backyard patio. This is also the spot to pick up local coffee beans and a variety of nut butter (among other things!).
Chicama
Chicama is in the La Punta neighborhood of Peurto Escondido and hands down one of the best places to eat (ate here twice in my week visit!). The restaurants serves delicious Peruvian cuisine. The ceviche is amazing but the tuna tartare is my fave. And of course there are plenty of delicious cocktails including pisco sour.
Rex Angel Tip: If you wish to pick up coffee beans to take home, Bi Nisa Cafe is the place to get your beans.

Best restaurants in Puerto Escondido
Dan’s Cafe
Dan’s Cafe is a chill spot especially for breakfast. The service is fantastic, the wi-fi is pretty decent, and there’s even a ping pong table if you need a break from basking in the sun.
El Cafecito
Another popular breakfast spot is El Cafecito, which is located in the Zicatela area. There is often a wait during the morning which typically takes 10-15 minutes (at least on the morning I went). The baked goods here are also fantastic. If you’re not planning to dine in, there is a take-out coffee/baked goods counter to the side.

Best restaurants in Puerto Escondido
Palma Negra
Palma Negra is an ice cream shop located close to Playa Carrizalillo. They have a variety of frozen treats, but I especially love the paletas. Lots of fruit flavors to choose from including mango, strawberry, and more. And there is some outdoor seating.
Mundaka
Mundaka is a Italian restaurant in the La Punta neighborhood. I can’t speak about their pasta, but the pizzas were delicious. The atmosphere is also nice and cozy! They have plenty of options from classics to pizza topped with shrimp. This is a great restaurant for large groups too.

Best restaurants in Puerto Escondido
Palapita Bar
I stumbled acrossed Palapita Bar (located right on Playa Zicatela) randomly on my first evening in Puerto Escondido. There is a small 360 bar as well as chairs right on the sand. Plus, the drinks are delicious and served in fun glasses. One of my fave cocktails is the “Tigger” which is a cafe mezcal base drink made with Kahlua and pineapple juice. Pina coladas here are served in pineapples AND happy hour takes place from 5-8pm.
Pinches Taco Bar
Pinches is located not too far from Playa Carrizalillo. This taco bar also serves quesadillas, salads, ceviche, and more. The service is excellent and atmosphere is fantastic (nice picnic table style seating). In addition, there is a topping bar for you to load up your tacos as you like.

Santa Fe Restaurant
This restaurant is a part of the Santa Fe Hotel located across from Playa Zicatela. It’s actually a vegetarian restaurant and the food is delicious. Tons of variety of their menu! Plus you get some great views of the beach from their balcony.
Sativa Puerto
Sativa is located on Playa Zicatela. The vibe is great with beautiful views of the ocean. I especially love that the staff let you lounge for quite some time. Their menu includes tacos, burgers, curries, and more. And while I’m not sure if this is a regular on their menu, their tiramisu with cafe mezcal was divine!

Best Beach in Tulum

Puerto Escondido is overall a safe town, especially in comparison to the beach cities of Quintana Roo. However, it’s still important to stay on alert as I’ve heard stories of muggings (especially on the beach at night). Use your common street smarts. And I suggest reading about safety in Mexico. Plus don’t forget your travel insurance. If applicable to you, check with your employee benefits to see if you are covered. Otherwise, I like World Nomads as it’s quite reputable and provides 24-hour assistance.
