Best Coffee in Tulum

BABEL Cafe
Babel Cafe is located right on Av. Tulum (the main street in centro) and is one of my favorite places to work while in Tulum. The staff are always a delight. In addition, nearly every table has an outlet and the cafe has decent Wi-Fi. Furthermore, the menu offers a variety of food choices alongside their fantastic coffee.

Cafetería Hunab Ku
Cafetería Hunab Ku is located around the corner of Av. Tulum, further south on the main strip. Alongside coffee, you can also enjoy brunch at this spot. Plus they serve their drinks is some great mugs. And like many Tulum spots, you can enjoy your coffee on a set of swings at this joint.

Cara Feliz
Cara Feliz is another one of my favorite places work in Tulum. The coffee shop is around the corner from Av. Tulum in the heart of Centro. The best part is the shop contains tons of books you can read while enjoying your coffee. Moreover, there is a lovely back patio which you may not first see when you walk in.

Chan Kaapeh
Chan Kaapeh is more of a coffee stand than shop as it sits off Av. Cobra (the main street that takes you to the beach). The barista takes their time to make your drink. I particularly recommend Chan Kaapeh’s iced drinks especially if you are walking or biking down the beach road.

Italdo
Italdo is known for its pastries in addition to its coffee. It can be found further south off Av. Tulum than any of the other shops listed in this place. It is right off the main road that takes you into the La Veleta neighborhood. The shop has a small patio and indoor space.

Ki’bok Coffee Tulum
No list of best coffee shops in Tulum is complete without the mention of Ki’bok. It is also located off Av. Tulum on another busy street called Calle Centauro Sur. You can find swings in front of the coffee bar, as well as find a seat in the three level building to enjoy your coffee.

Líquido y Sólido
Líquido y Sólido can be found further south on Av. Tulum. It is also a spot known for its juice and smoothies. Moreover, you can also find a delicious and healthy brunch menu at this spot.

Safety in Tulum

Tulum is overall a safe town, but definitely a place to be on alert. I’ve heard stories of muggings, home robberies, and gun violence (typically related to drug violence) but did not witness anything myself during my two visits (the second lasting two months). Use your common street smarts. For instance, I rarely walked home alone in Centro after 10pm. That being said, I do suggest reading about safety in Mexico. And I do advocate for travel insurance. If applicable to you, check with your employee benefits to see if you are covered. Otherwise, I like World Nomads as it’s quite reputable and provides 24-hour assistance.
